Ghanaians are running out of patience- AFAG tells police, Mahama

Pressure Group Alliance for Accountable Governance is fuming over a court order secured by the police service to stop them from embarking on their much awaited demonstration.

Director of Operations of the group Abu Ramadan told Joy News the order is nothing but a “deliberate ploy” by the police to stifle their constitutional right to demonstrate.

After weeks of consultations, the police and AFAG agreed to the April 18 date for the demonstration with the latter feverishly preparing to hit the streets.

But the police say their attention has been drawn to the fact that the trial of the election petition case will begin on 16 April and sitting will be heard each day which means they would rather have to provide security at the Supreme Court and not for the demonstrators.

The police say they are under staffed and cannot provide security for the demonstrators and at the same time secure the premises of the Supreme Court for the trial of the election petition.

On Friday the police therefore secured a court order to prevent AFAG from embarking on the demonstration.

But Abu Ramadan said the police’s action is “unheard off.”

“Where in the law does it state that when a court is sitting the police cannot provide security for picketers,” he asked.

He said Ghanaians are running out of patience with the Mahama administration and any attempt to prevent them from expressing themselves through a demonstration will be resisted.

He said their lawyers are considering a restraining order at the courts to overturn the earlier decision.

Why Mark Zuckerberg Is Pushing For Immigration Reform

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg listens to a question during a media event at Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California March 7, 2013. REUTERS/Robert Galbraith (UNITED STATES - Tags: SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS) - RTR3EP7Q[caption id="attachment_592" align="aligncenter" width="300"]
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg listens to a question during a media event at Facebook headquarters[/caption] America has always been a nation of immigrants, but today, there is general agreement that the U.S. immigration system is broken. The southern border remains porous, there are 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the shadows, and tens of thousands of the most promising immigrants are forced to leave the country thanks to outdated visa rules. Now, some of the wealthiest and most successful tech executives and investors in the country — led by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg – are calling for immigration reform. [wp_ad_camp_1] “We have a strange immigration policy for a nation of immigrants,” Zuckerberg wrote Thursday in The Washington Post. “And it’s a policy unfit for today’s world.” Zuckerberg has joined forces with top executives and founders from Google, Yahoo, and LinkedIn to launch a new organization called FWD.us, with the goal of influencing the current debate. Several top venture capitalists are also participating. “To lead the world in this new economy, we need the most talented and hardest-working people,” Zuckerberg wrote. “We need to train and attract the best.” [wp_ad_camp_3] Visa reform is particularly important for these tech titans, because immigrants have played such an important role in Silicon Valley. “Immigrants are far more likely than natives to study science and engineering and more likely to produce innovations in the form of patents,” University of California economist Gordon Hanson wrote in a 2011 study. “Expanding the supply of immigration visas for high-skilled workers increases patenting activity in science and engineering, particularly in US high-tech firms.” But thanks to outdated visa rules, tens of thousands of skilled immigrants are forced to return home — after being educated in the U.S. — because the government does not issue enough H-1B visas. This has led to what author Vivek Wadhwa has called America’s “immigrant exodus.” This “reverse brain drain” of talent is having real consequences. The proportion of immigrant-founded companies nationwide has slipped from 25.3% to 24.3% since 2005, and in Silicon Valley, the percentage of immigrant-founded startups declined from 52.4% to 43.9% during that time, according to a recent study co-authored by Wadhwa and the Kaufman Foundation. Many tech executives — starting with the late Steve Jobs — have argued that there aren’t enough American-born math and science graduates to fill the engineering jobs in Silicon Valley’s booming economy, and thus we need to attract, and keep, the best and brightest foreign-born workers. A recent study by the consulting firm McKinsey found that 45% of U.S. employers surveyed say that a “skills shortage” is a leading reason for entry-level vacancies. In a widely discussed 2011 Wall Street Journal article, Marc Andreessen, arguably Silicon Valley’s top venture capitalist, wrote that “every company I work with is absolutely starved for talent.”   Others have called such claims exaggerated, and suggested these jobs could go to American-born tech workers. These critics say the H-1B program allows U.S. companies to train foreign workers and then “outsource” them abroad at lower wages, thus hurting U.S. workers. And some tech experts say that the immigration debate “has to start with the education and re-education of the American workforce.” In any event, this has become a major issue for Silicon Valley. ”Why do we kick out the more than 40 percent of math and science graduate students who are not U.S. citizens after educating them?” Zuckerberg asked. “Why do we offer so few H-1B visas for talented specialists that the supply runs out within days of becoming available each year, even though we know each of these jobs will create two or three more American jobs in return? Why don’t we let entrepreneurs move here when they have what it takes to start companies that will create even more jobs?” The answer, according to Wadhwa, is that the toxic state of U.S. politics, and the rancorous debate over illegal immigration, have made immigration reform all but impossible in recent years. “Both the Democrats and the Republicans agree that we want the entrepreneurs, the scientists, the doctors, the researchers,” Wadhwa told me last fall. “Everyone agrees that we want these people to stay. But there’s a stalemate on the issue of amnesty for illegal workers.”   There are signs in Washington, D.C., that a grand bargain on immigration reform may be on the horizon, and Zuckerberg and his allies clearly want to influence its contours. FWD.us is calling for comprehensive immigration reform that “begins with effective border security, allows a path to citizenship and lets us attract the most talented and hardest-working people, no matter where they were born.” The group is also calling for higher standards in schools, a “much greater focus” on science, technology, engineering, and math, and more investment in scientific research. For Zuckerberg, as for so many Americans, immigration is also a personal issue. “My great-grandparents came through Ellis Island,” he wrote. “My grandfathers were a mailman and a police officer. My parents are doctors. I started a company. None of this could have happened without a welcoming immigration policy, a great education system and the world’s leading scientific community that created the Internet.”

Toshiba shines with world’s thinnest tablet at CES 2012

The 2012 edition of Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas USA did not disappoint. Being the biggest platform for tech companies to show-off their latest innovations, a lot of new tablets (mostly running the Android OS) were among the announced.
I have followed the news reports and one tablet that stood-out of the crowd was Toshiba’s Excite x10. It is exciting.
From PC World:
This 10.1-inch tablet distinguishes itself as the only model that can be called both the thinnest and lightest: It measures just 0.3-inches thick and weighs 1.18 pounds. It has a Texas Instruments 1.2-GHz OMAP 4430 multicore processor, 1GB of memory, and a 1280-by-800 resolution IPS display. The display looked good, with a minimal air-gap and a wide viewing angle; but text and graphics weren’t as sharp as on the higher-resolution displays. Toshiba hopes to be able to ship the tablet in the middle of the first quarter with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Toshiba says it will cost $530 for the 16GB model and $600 for the 32GB version.

Other features include:
  • 0.3″ thin
  • 1.2lbs
  • 10.1” AutoBrite™ Multi-touch Display
  • Scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass
  • Powered by Android™
  • Dual-core processor
  • Micro HDMI® port
  • Micro USB port
  • Micro SD Card Slot
  • Stereo Speakers
  • Two HD Cameras
Be aware that the device does not support 3G nor any cellular connectivity. Instead, connectivity is via wifi only.

I am not hiding, Afari Gyan tells Judges

Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan says he will honour any invitation by the Justices of the Supreme Court if invited.

He described as frivolous claims that he has gone into hiding to avoid any humiliation in court in the ongoing Election Petition before the Supreme Court.

Dr. Afari Gyan’s comment is in reaction to a query by Justice Dotse, one the Judges sitting on the Election Petition of his whereabouts .

But in an interview with Ekosii Sen producer Dominic Kissi Yeboah via mobile phone, Dr. Afari Gyan said he will be in court when the substantive case begins.

He noted that as the Returning Officer for the 2012 election he has nothing to hide and is ever ready to go to court if needed.

The EC boss said he is always in his office working and therefore found it strange speculations in the media that he has travelled abroad.

Can a Woman Play In the NBA?

On Tuesday, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban made waves — shocker, I know — by suggesting that he would be open to selecting 6’8″ Baylor center Britney Griner in the second round of this year’s NBA draft. Or he’d invite Griner, probably the most dominant player in women’s basketball history, to play on Dallas’ summer league team. Said Cuban, via ESPN Dallas/Fort Worth:
“If she is the best on the board, I will take her … I’ve thought about it. I’ve thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it.”
Cuban admitted that the move would have strong marketing potential. At the very least, it would draw more interest in the NBA summer league. “That’d sell out a few games,” Cuban said.
But at least one prominent women’s coach isn’t buying Cuban’s talk. Geno Auriemma, the women’s coach at UConn, and coach of the U.S. national team that won gold in London last summer, had this to say during a teleconference:
“Obviously Mark Cuban is a genius because he’s been able to parlay some great ideas into billion dollar industries and he’s done a great job as owner of the Dallas Mavericks. He’s won an NBA championship and he’s done an awful lot for basketball. His genius would take a huge hit if he drafted Brittney Griner. And if Brittney Griner tries to make it to an NBA team, I think it would be a public relations thing and I think it would be a sham. The fact that a woman could actually play right now in the NBA and compete successfully against the level of play that they have is absolutely ludicrous.”
In an email response to USA Today, Cuban emphasized that Griner would have to excel in pre-draft workouts in order to be drafted.
“I have no problem giving her that opportunity … I hope she gives it a shot. Nothing harms an organization or company more than a closed mind.”
Griner seems to be on board. “@mcuban so when do I show up for tryouts” Griner tweeted.
Even if Cuban’s chatter is something of a publicity stunt … so what? If Cuban is offering Griner at least a chance, and Griner wants to take the opportunity, that would be great for basketball. NBA teams have drafted women players before. In 1969, the San Francisco Warriors selected a high school student, Denise Long, in the 13th round; Long had averaged a cool 69.6 points per game in her senior year. Then-NBA commissioner Walter Kennedy voided the pick, since the NBA did not allow high school players to be drafted at the time (he also deemed it a pure publicity stunt). In 1977, the New Orleans Jazz picked Lusia Harris, from Delta State, in the seventh round. But she did not try out; it turned out that Harris was pregnant at the time.
Cuban is unlikely to draft Griner. The NBA draft has only two rounds now. So although late-second round picks are unlikely to make a team, they’re still assets. Cuban knows publicity, and he’s aware that if a player selected after Griner goes on to have a successful NBA career, he’ll get pilloried.
But what’s the harm of inviting Griner to camp as a free agent? That’s also happened before; Ann Myers, of UCLA, participated in a three-day tryout with the Indiana Pacers in 1979.  (She didn’t make it). Or why shouldn’t Griner suit up for a summer league game? There, she’d have a fair shot to prove if she can compete. Everyone would be watching. And if you’re an NBA owner like Cuban, what’s wrong with everyone watching your team?

Kotoko hit 3 past Rainbow FC to reach FA Cup quarters

After their Champions League exit, Asante Kotoko put themselves in contention for another trophy by reaching the quarter-finals in the MTN FA Cup on Wednesday.

The Porcupine Warriors defeated second-tier side Rainbow FC 3-0 in the last fixture for the Round of 16 at the Baba Yara Stadium.

A Kwabena Adusei penalty in the first half was followed by two more strikes after the break by Seidu Bance and David Offei.

The win will somehow calm the frustration within the Kotoko camp after their elimination on Sunday by Algeria's JSM Bejaia in the CAF Champions League.

Akufo-Addo deserves the noble peace prize

Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, Member of Parliament for Tema East has applauded Nana Akufo-Addo for his democratic feat, craving for him to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

The Tema East MP of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) commended him for resorting to the law court to make his case about the allegations leveled against President John Mahama and the Electoral Commission regarding last year’s December 7 polls.

According to him, Nana Addo has set the pace for Africa’s democracy to take another dimension.

He explained that, Nana Addo set the example for the Kenyan defeated Presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, to proceed to court to challenge the legitimacy of the country’s President, Uhuru Kenyatta.

After identifying some irregularities in the Presidential results during the polls, Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his Running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and National Chairman of the party, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, headed to the Supreme Court to challenge the declaration by Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, EC Chairman, which saw President Mahama emerge as winner in the general elections.

The three NPP leaders filed a petition at the court in the hope that the declaration is overturned in favour of the party’s flagbearer.

This, according to the Tema East MP, shows that “Nana Akufo-Addo has set the pace of democracy in this country Ghana and across the world, he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize Award…Akufo-Addo has given us the cure. He has walked the talk.”

To him, Nana Addo is the “competent driver to steer the affairs of this country.”

BNI should investigate Nana Addo’s missing certificate

Leader and Founder of the United Renaissance Party (URP), Charles Kofi Wayo says the Bereau of National Investigations (BNI) should step in to investigate the alleged missing certificate of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

According to him, the missing certificate of a high-profile personality as Nana Addo dents Ghana’s image and so, called on the National Security to take the issue up to unravel the truth.

Kofi Wayo in an interview on Radio Gold also asked President Mahama to take keen interest in the brouhaha about Nana Addo’s missing law certificate because the issue exposes the country’s integrity which he stated is at stake.

He believed if President Mahama makes an intervention, it would serve as a panacea to the perception put out in the global world.

He therefore asked the Nana Akufo-Addo, whose qualification as a lawyer has been questioned by a retired Supreme Court Judge, whether the period that his certificate “got missing, did you report to the Police?...In this particular case, the BNI should step in and do the investigations. That’s how you run a country. You can’t run a country on hearsay, hearsay…The law got to function. You got to move when you got to move. So, the question is what is the BNI doing?” he asked, stressing that the case “has something to do with the name of Ghana.

The whole world thinks Ghanaians are fraudulent, the whole government is fraudulent, Judges are corrupt, the lawyers are corrupt. This is what’s out there, this is the reality...So, the President should ask the BNI to investigate this case and bring to the people to determine whether or not this is being done.”

Zain Ghana: How to Pre-Register Your Dream Phone Number

Due to the overwhelming interest in my previous blog post “Zain Ghana Number Reservation“, I feel obliged to follow it up with a detailed guideline on how to pre-register your phone number on the Zain Ghana network.
I need to point out that Zain Ghana itself, caused some of the confusion on the Internet today. I fail to understand why they preferred a sub-domain like ichoose.gh.zain.com to promote this number reservation drive. Such a not-so-simple sub-domain is very open to mis-spellings and many are those who have been mis-spelling thus being led to the wrong websites, or getting error messages. Zain Ghana should have simply promoted http://gh.zain.com with a re-direct to www.gh.zain.com or dutifully registered zain.com.gh with a redirect to www.gh.zain.com Also, I do not see how they could allow rancardmobility.com to host the phone number reservation application. Of course, I understand that RanCard Mobility is their application developer in this case, but the application should still have been hosted on Zain Ghana’s own website.
Phone number pre-registration is nothing new. Just recently, Etisalat Nigeria heavily promoted its www.etisalat.com.ng and that same website hosted its pre-registration scheme.
From many on the comments I got on my previous blog post, many complained about not being able to get to the 3rd registration page but I just completed it without a problem and I got a confirmation immediately via SMS and email. I have crossed-out the sensitive details:
Congratulations Oluniyi!
You have successfully reserved your Zain number. Your details are below;
Your Zain Number: 026 XXXXXXX
Reservation Code: XXXXXXXX
Please keep your reservation code safe. You will need it to retrieve your Zain number.
Zain. A Wonderful World.
I feel Rancard could do more by providing a step-by-step detailed guide for the average Kofi and Ama. An FAQ section would also be nice.
For those who find still the reservation website too difficult to use, you may reserve the phone number of your choice by calling Zain Ghana directly on 026-0000111. Better still, you can visit one of the Zain canopies in town. I saw a few of them around Kwame Nkrumah Circle yesterday. Be sure you are dealing with the right people in Zain polo t-shirts and do not pay to anyone to pre-register your Zain Ghana phone number.
Welcome to Ghana, Zain.

Have smartphones become indispensable business tools?

I have used smartphones (mostly Nokia) for a few years now but started using BlackBerry since July 2010 and have never been a day without a BlackBerry ever since – until now. The BlackBerry device became the central point of my daily communication routine. I could read, forward, reply personal and business emails quickly. I could follow the conversation streams on Facebook and Twitter apps when I was idle. I could take photos at events and post same to Twitpic without waiting till I got to my laptop. I could chat with friends far and near via BlackBerry Messenger or some of the other chat apps installed on the device. I used phone calls and SMS only where extremely necessary, thus saving costs. I could manage my blogs from the device: moderate comments, publish new blog posts, view traffic stats etc. I could grab trophies from FourSquare as I explore new places. I could find my way around using Google Maps. I even completed hotel bookings on the device, using BlackBerry Travel app. Granted, the BlackBerry smartphone could never replace the full experience of a laptop for me, but it made me much more efficient as I had a lesser workload to tackle when I sat behind my laptop.

You can thus understand how frustrating it has been in the past 10 days that I have been without the full benefits of my BlackBerry smartphone. Most personal emails remain unread,  I’m struggling with a piling workload, over 150 comments are pending moderation on my personal blog alone, I’m out of touch with friends I normally chat with regularly. I’m unable to share the fun of: Cape Town, WordCamp, how I celebrated my birthday, and other escapades in South Africa. In a nutshell, life has not been so frustrating in recent days.
Yes. I have tried very hard to fix this problem. I’ve subscribed to BlackBerry Internet Service from two cellular operators: Vodacom SA and MTN SA. I’ve contacted MTN Nigeria where I last used the device successfully and they confirmed my device is not tied to their network, I’ve called MTN and Vodacom customer service over 16 times, I’ve visited MTN offices in Cape Town and Jo’burg 3 times, I’ve wiped the device and re-installed the operating system in case any of the installed apps is causing the problem. MTN is suggesting the device is the problem, I’ve entered the settings they gave me and diligently followed all their suggestions. All to no avail. Now I am in touch with RIM, manufacturers of BlackBerry smartphones.
This little experience I am still going through has emphasized how much many of us have come to rely on smartphones, for running our personal and business lives. It is quite normal fiddle with the smartphone before falling asleep and it is the first thing we grab before brushing our teeth in the morning or saying those morning prayers. Ah, I use the Bible app on my smartphone more than my bulky physical Bible.
Business life is much easier with a BlackBerry but when things go wrong, life can be hectic. Very hectic.
Have you been separated from the joy of using your smartphone for a long period? Share the experience in the comment area.

Making Money Online: Getting paid by cheque

Whether you are an affiliate (a member of a multi-level marketing scheme [MLM]), an online forex or hyip investor, or you run an online store or make make money online somewhat, you need to get paid. There are several ways of getting paid but which one you choose will depend on your country of residence, and then what’s more convenient for you.
Cheque: Good old paper cheque. This is the worst way of getting paid online even if you live in the same country as the company behind the website you’re dealing with. First there are currency issues, then postage, and then deposit into your bank account.
If you an affiliate, chances are your parent MLM company is US-based and they issue cheques denominated in US Dollars. If you’re based outside the western world, hard-luck. First, you need to wait for a few weeks for your cheque to be prepared and mailed out. Regular mailing is probably free, but the cheque could take between 1 and 3 weeks to get to you or might never get to you at all because it can get stolen or “lost-in-transit”. Sending via services like DHL, UPS or Fedex could attract an additional fee of about $30 but you’d get the cheque in about a week.
So you got the cheque? Now what? You need to deposit it into your bank account. Your local bank would usually require that you have a US dollar denominated account to be able to deposit such cheques and you need to wait for between 3 and 6 weeks for the cheque to clear! What your bank actually does is to send the cheque back to the USA and clear it through their corresponding bank. This takes time.
Now wait for the worst part: your bank will charge you a fee, for clearing the cheque. Depending on your country, this could be anywhere between $15 and $50! (I’ve had a bank charge me $50 to clear a cheque with a face value of $75 here in Ghana before).
Way out?
A way out of this is to open a US checking account (that’s what current accounts are called in the US & Canada) but then the cheque has to come to you first for endorsement and then you need to mail it back to the USA. Your US bank is not likely to charge you any fee for clearing the cheque. The major hurdle is how to open the US bank account. Since 9/11 terrorist attack, the USA Patriot Act requires that all financial institutions obtain, verify and keep the identity information of any individual or organization that opens a new US bank account.
Opening a US Bank Account
Now, most of the banks require the Social Security Number (SSN) of account applicants, as well as Passport, state ID or driver’s license. The SSN angle makes it virtually impossible for a non-US resident but a few banks accommodate none-US residents, through very stringent means.
In my opinion, paper cheques should be scrapped as a means of making payments less than $1,000 for all the reasons I have stated above. There are other means of receiving payments online. I’d deal with these in the 2nd part of this post.
